Telus is thinking about the possibility of switching to the global system for mobile communications (GSM). The main reason behind this is capture additional international roaming fees from competitor Rogers Communications Inc.
Rogers currently is the only operator in Canada’s on a GSM network. The Star reports the changeover from the code division multiple access system (CDMA), which Telus is now using may cost as much as C$500 million. If Telus does move on this initiative it would allow Telus subscribers when overseas to choose larger and cheaper wireless phone plans.
