Research firm iSuppli has put a report together that shows global shipments of handsets for Q2 2009 has increased by 4.7% from last quarter. They show that a total of 265 million units were shipped, up from 253 million.
Tina Teng, senior analyst, wireless communications for iSuppli said “The moderate increase indicates the worldwide handset market is bottoming out and now is returning to growth. The global economic downturn has had a particularly harsh impact on the worldwide handset as declining disposable incomes dissuaded consumers from making non-essential purchases like upgraded wireless handsets. The recession brought to an end eight consecutive years of annual shipment growth for cell phones, and will result in the first market contraction since 2001.”
Also, the report shows the top 5 handset manufacturers are as follows: Nokia, Samsung, LGE, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.
