Last week a few Google engineers and students from the University of California sent 7 styrofoam beer coolers with helium-filled weather balloons, video cameras and Nexus S devices up into space. The purpose was “to see how well the phone’s sensors cope with a freezing cold near-vacuum”… plus it made for great publicity.
Today Google has released a minute video of “unaltered footage of an Android at over 100,000 ft above the Earth’s surface” (all shot by the Nexus S). To capture the footage Google says they had several app running: Google Maps for Mobile 5.0, Google Sky Map, Latitude and a custom sensor logging app. Check out the video and full impressive stats after the break

Maximum Speed: 139 mph
Maximum Altitude: 107,375 ft (over 20 miles, over 30 km)
Maximum Ascent Rate: 5.44 m/s
Average Flight Duration: 2 hours, 40 minutes
Average Descent Time: 34 minutes
GPS in Nexus S could function up to altitudes of about 60,000 ft.
Nexus S could withstand harsh temperatures (as low as -50˚C)
Very cool. Wonder how they will top this for the 3rd generation of the Nexus lineup.
