Skype for Android has been updated to version 2.1, and in the familiar Android vein, device support is slowly being added with each iteration. This one brings video calling to 17 new products, including the popular Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, HTC Desire and Desire HD (even though they don’t have front-facing cameras), HTC Sensation and Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, among others.
While the Nexus S has support video calling for a couple months now, it was the only widely-released device in Canada to support the protocol, so it’s with some relief that we report this. One caveat is that a supported device needs to be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but initial reports say that explicitly turning on Video support in the settings can enable the feature in Android 2.2 Froyo.
We haven’t had a chance to try out the feature yet, but it’s nice to know that Android users are getting some video calling love, especially after the fragmented way in which front-facing cameras have been proliferating the market in recent months.
