Rogers has announced today that their LTE network will go live in Toronto on September 28th, 2011, the second city in their 4-city roll out. Ottawa was the first city to experience LTE (Long Term Evolution) speeds, Montreal and Vancouver will be going live by the end of 2011. LTE can potentially reach peak download speeds of up to 150 Mbps and upload speeds could hit 70 Mbps.
The only device that currently for sale is the Sierra Wireless Rocket Stick (AirCard 313U). This is available for $169.99 no term and $79.99 on a 3-year contract, but Rogers stated some incredible news! Five LTE devices will be available by the end of year, the LTE version of the Galaxy S II, Sierra Wireless AirCard 754S, LTE Tablet (probably the Samsung Tab 8.9), and an LTE HTC smartphone.
“Rogers also announced customers in Toronto and Ottawa can be among the first in the world to experience LTE wireless devices when the company continues to roll out its LTE product line this fall. It includes: the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE Smartphone; the LTE Rocket™ mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard® 754S); Rogers LTE RocketTM stick (now available in Ottawa); LTE Tablet from a leading manufacturer; and the previously announced HTC Smartphone.”
As for the rate plans, most likely the internet stick data plans will be the same as Ottawa. No word on the price of the monthly plans for the smartphones, but the internet stick plans are:
1.5GB: $45
3GB: $60
6GB: $75
9GB: $90
Each additional GB after 9GB is $10
Huge news.
