The CWTA (Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association) latest stats shows about 25 million wireless subscribers in Canada. Most of these subs are with Rogers, Bell and TELUS, but the new entrants have had their impact. It’s not really known how many subscribers they’ve brought in, WIND has about 400,000 and Public and Moblicity are private so they don’t announce their numbers. The Convergence Group suggests that by the end of 2014 the new entrants will have captured 12% of the Canadian wireless market, which represents 4 million subs. The main impact that the new entrants have succeeded in is dropping monthly rate plans, and possibly the cost of handsets.
WIND Mobile officially released their holiday promotion today and have also came out with a bunch of new stats. Through a commissioned Angus Reid survey of 899 Canadians between October 27th to October 28th the survey found that:
– 77% of Canadians with a cellphone feel that the increase in wireless competition over the past two years has been positive
– 54% of Canadians with a cellphone feel that the prices for mobile phone services have come down over the past two years
– 86% agree that there are more choices available for mobile phone service plans now than there were two years ago
– 74% of Canadians who own a cellphone feel that they have more freedom now that they no longer have to lock into a contract
What are your thoughts on the above stats? Do you agree/disagree?
