The Vimeo community is considered a bit more refined than that of everything-goes YouTube, and until now has focused its mobile deployment only on the iPhone. As the video sharing site broaches more of the mainstream market, they are releasing Android and Windows Phone apps to meet the increased demand for mobile access.
Like the website (and iOS app) you can search for content as well as like and view your Watch Later list. If you have an account, you can create content right from the app itself in addition to sharing uploaded videos to various social networks.
The app has been adapted for Android tablets, too, which divides the screen into viewing and navigable areas. Like the newly-released WordPress app, Vimeo for Android uses a grid layout that utilizes many of the Android 2.3+ APIs. This redesign should be rolling out for iPhones soon, with an update to support the larger real estate of the iPad.
At the moment editing abilities have not been added to these new apps, but will come shortly.
The Windows Phone interface is all Metro, though. Though I didn’t get a chance to use it, from the screenshots it looks clean and highly functional — one of the best-looking apps yet released for the platform.
Be sure to download the official Android app as there are a few unofficial ones using the same Vimeo logo. The Windows Phone version hasn’t yet been added to the Marketplace but we’ll update the post with the link when it is.
