RIM’s quarterly results have revealed that the BlackBerry PlayBook has racked up shipments of 850,000 (Q1 had 500,000, Q2 had 200,000, and 150,000 in Q3). Sure, below analysts expectations, but the tablet will be getting a renewed jolt of enthusiasm when the official PlayBook OS 2.0 is available to the masses.
Recent survey results have been released by the Solutions Research Group (SRG) that indicate RIM’s PlayBook has climbed up in Canadian tablet market share. SRG says their findings from 1,000 Canadians shows the PlayBook having 15% of market share, up about 5% from last fall. The reason for the massive jump was caused by the continuous price discounts over the past few months. The PlayBook launched April 19th, 2011 and ranged in price from $499.99 to $699.99 outright. Now, various sales and promotions have seen the tablet hit as low as $199 – which is honestly a great deal.
The iPad still owns the Canadian market, but apparently falling fast. SRG reported that Apple’s iPad has 68% market share, down from 86% last fall (18% drop in a few months). There’s no indication where the other 17% market share is, most likely Android tablets like the Galaxy Tab, HTC Flyer or LG’s Optimus Pad.
