RIM: Carriers who offer integrated billing on BlackBerry App World see 120% increase in app downloads

Carrier billing makes it easier and more convenient for customers to purchase apps. Today RIM communicated that 40 carriers around the world have implemented this, for us here in Canada have three: Rogers, Bell and TELUS.

In a press release RIM stated that their “data suggests that customers’ propensity to purchase apps on BlackBerry App World increases when carrier billing is offered. After implementing carrier billing on BlackBerry App World, carriers on average experienced a 120% increase in BlackBerry app purchases by their customers, with 65-70% of their customers’ purchases being transacted through the carrier.”

Unfortunately there’s no other details about the carrier billing app downloads. It would be interesting for RIM to give a bit more detail to understand specifically the timing of what makes up the 120% increase, plus which carriers are seeing the most downloads, at what times, what people are downloading and what devices are they downloading to: specific smartphones or the PlayBook.

BlackBerry App World numbers have not changed since DevCon Europe a few weeks ago – BlackBerry App World is available in 164 markets around the world, over 60,000 available apps, over 174 million apps are downloaded every month, and over 2 billion apps have been downloaded to date. Solid stats from a company who has over 75 million BlackBerry subscribers worldwide.
