RIM and TomTom sign deal that brings real-time traffic information to BlackBerry apps

BlackBerry Traffic has been available in the BlackBerry App World since late November 2010. The app is one of their more popular apps and gives users real-time traffic updates. Today, at CTIA in New Orleans, TomTom and RIM announced a partnership that will see BlackBerry Traffic be powered by TomTom HD Traffic. According to the press release this will give “customers access to the most accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date traffic information on the market.” Sounds like a great move, better than going with Bing Maps. The more important takeaway from the announcement is the inclusion of “TomTom maps and location content” that developers could integrate into their apps. So we could potentially see a whole new arena of map/traffic focussed apps coming with the new BlackBerry 10 platform later this year.

Martyn Mallick, VP at RIm, said “We’re thrilled to work with TomTom to leverage their industry-leading traffic and travel content for BlackBerry Traffic and BlackBerry Maps, and to enable access to those capabilities for BlackBerry developers as well.”
