A leaked spec sheet for an upcoming LG phone is, if true, a good indicator of what we can expect in the Android world by the end of the year. As quad-core + HSPA+ gives way to quad-core + LTE, the market also seems to be shifting to more RAM as a way to differentiate. At least, that’s what LG is doing.
The leaked LS970 looks to be packed with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 built on Qualcomm’s 28nm Krait architecture, and a separate MDM9615 LTE chip, similar to the non-integrated method used in the Snapdragon S3 series. The reason? Unlike the dual-core S4 chips which are small enough to have integrated LTE, Qualcomm hasn’t figured out a way to make bundle an LTE baseband into its quad-core wares. If the LG LS970 is the first phone to sport such a setup, all we’re concerned about is how long the 2100mAh battery will last.
The handset also seems primed to come with 2GB RAM and a 13MP camera in addition to a 4.7-inch HD True IPS display. The APQ8064 SoC/MDM9615 combination is interesting for a couple reasons: first, it contains the yet-to-be-benchmarked Adreno 320 GPU, which Qualcomm is touting as a huge improvement over the current-generation Adreno 225. Considering Qualcomm has been shopping around the APQ8064 to tablet manufacturers, we’re surprised to see it show up in a phone. The second reason is that the MDM9615 modem is capable of VoLTE (Voice Over LTE), something that both U.S. and Canadian carriers have cited as coming to the market in the next year. It also has enough processing power to avoid taking cycles from the CPU when accessing LTE for data.
While certainly not a finished product, the specs give a good indication of what’s to come in the next six to nine months. This particular product, which is being shopped around under the moniker Eclipse, is expected to ship by Q4.
