The man behind the Absinthe jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is back again with some news about his latest untethered masterpiece for iOS 5.1.x.
pod2g has written on his blog that the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad 2 and the new iPad is going to be released “in a couple weeks,” after sufficient user testing has been done. He also said that support for earlier devices such as iPhone 3GS is in the works, but at the moment the jailbreak is incompatible with the Apple TV v3.
Many users were worried that the iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak would be the last one seen before iOS 6, which is expected to debut in June during WWDC, but apparently the risk of Apple patching the exploit is too great to wait around. iOS 5.1.1 is likely going to be the last, or penultimate, release before then, so pod2g feels it’s the right time to unleash it on the world.
iOS 5.1 fixed a lot of bugs that were introduced in the initial release, including Caller ID Name Display that affected many Rogers and Fido users. Since most current jailbreakers have been reluctant to update to 5.1.1, they are missing out on a number of security, battery and performance updates from Apple.
