During CES 2012 Corning was on hand demonstrating their new Gorilla Glass 2. We captured a video of Corning reps attempting to crack and scratch the display, which has the same strength and durability as the original Gorilla Glass, but 20% thinner. You can check out the video here and good news for those thinking about grabbing the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III as Corning has confirmed that Gorilla Glass 2 “has been designed” into the smartphone.
In a press release Haeng-Hee (HH) Lee, president and general manager of Corning, said “We are excited about the introduction of Corning Gorilla Glass 2 because it provides device makers with numerous design benefits without sacrificing toughness. With Corning Gorilla Glass 2, Samsung GALAXY S III customers will enjoy an enhanced smartphone experience.”
I’m looking forward to seeing a GS III drop test video pop up on YouTube. In addition, Corning now says Gorilla Glass is “used by more than 30 major brands and designed into more than 750 product models, spanning over 750 million units worldwide.” The number of brands is the same, but the mounting number of devices graced with Gorilla Glass has increased by 250 million since January 2012.
