Bloomberg: Amazon to release a smartphone, specs and OS a mystery

An Amazon smartphone is back in the news. This was first reported back in November of 2011, then again in April 2012. Now, a post in Bloomberg says that “two people with knowledge of the matter” know Amazon’s smartphone plans and development is currently happening. Amazon is looking to take on both the iPhone and the plethora of Android devices, but the report doesn’t indicate what OS is being used. Previous rumours pointed towards Amazon possibly licensing RIM’s BlackBerry 10 OS, but nothing has been confirmed. There could also be a chance that Amazon could go a similar route as their Kindle Fire tablet with a customized version Android.

Apparently the Amazon smartphone is being manufactured by Foxconn and will be low-cost, with a goal to make money by users purchasing digital books, magazines, songs and movies. As for specs, previous rumours again stated that we would see their smartphone packed with a Texas Instrument’s OMAP 4 processor. It’s also rumoured that Amazon will release their smartphone sometime in November.
