LG to manufacture its own quad-core chip, says report

Following in the footsteps of other Android OEMs, LG is reported to be working on a quad-core SoC dubbed L9. The part, which is of unknown speed or design, will apparently debut in a flagship device later this year, alongside a 10MP camera and TrueIPS display. It’s rumoured to be a lost-cost variant based on the Cortex-A9 design.

Expected in September, or close to, the move is meant to ween LG’s reliance on other silicone; the company already produces its own displays, and the more parts it can create itself and the more control they have over the whole process, the better equipped they will be to weather the various storms of parts shortages, price fluctuations and parts hoarding.

Samsung and Huawei are two manufacturers who have endeavoured to manufacturer their own SoCs, and the former’s Exynos family has become the de facto example of a successful integrated product. The international Galaxy S III runs the Exynos 4 Quad, which is considered one of the fastest mobile processors on the market today.

LG has made a lot of noise in recent months about how they want to win back those high-end customers through great products and unique design. While we’d argue that their current lineup hews a little closely to existing Samsung products, they’re doing a great job winning mindshare — now they just have to translate it into market share.
