During RIM’s Q1 Fiscal 2013 results the company announced plans to reduce their global workforce by 5,000. Certainly unfortunate news, but we all know the inevitable day is coming. As speculation rises about when RIM will give the official word, Cantech Letter is going on record and stating “the quiet halls of Research in Motion offices will grow even quieter on August 13th.”
This is a Monday, which is a very unusual day to cut staff, but apparently RIM wants to break the news before the Q2 results, which ends August 31st. Cantech notes that 3,000 people will be notified on this date, mainly those in customer service, human resources, marketing, non-enterprise sales and the Global Repair Services. RIM employees who are working on the BlackBerry 10 OS and those in an enterprise sales position are reportedly “safe.”
RIM previously stated the reason for the job cuts are part of a larger company initiative to save $1 billion. The main focus these days for RIM is solely on the upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS, which is expected to be in-market by Q1 2013.
