The Nexus S never really got the send-off it deserved: the former flagship is coming up on two years old and, with the release of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, Google decided it was not in its best interests to continue supporting the aging single-core handset.
But, like the Nexus One before it, developers have breathed new life into the Samsung-built smartphone. The CyanogenMOD team has released its first official nightly version of CM10.1, based on Android 4.2.1 source code.
Like its Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 peers, Android 4.2.1 works great on the Nexus S and but for one persistent bug — the phone’s accelerometer is not working so it does not detect rotation requests — the build is flawless.
For anyone who’s been rocking a Nexus S for nearly two years now and hasn’t delved into the murky waters of custom Android ROMs, now is your time. You’re going to be upgrading soon anyway, right?!
