Samsung recently announced a bevy of tablets as part of its quickly-growing Galaxy Tab 3 lineup: a 7-inch version; an 8-inch model; and a 10.1-inch flagship.
The company informed us that these tablets will be coming to Canada in July, priced between $199 and $399, to expand its presence in the entry- and mid-range market. We’re increasingly seeing Samsung drawing a line between its Tab and Note series, the latter being priced at a premium for their more robust specs and S Pen additions.
To review, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 comes with a 7-inch 1024×600 resolution, a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, a 3MP camera, a 4000mAh battery, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It weighs a slight 302g and is svelte at 9.9mm.
The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 ups the game a lot, bringing a 1280×800 resolution display, a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, 16GB internal storage, 1.5GB RAM, a 5MP camera, a 4450mAh battery, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It also weighs a slight 314g and comes in even thinner at 7.4mm.
The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is a strange beast. It offers a 1.6Ghz dual-core chip, but it’s an x86-based Intel Clover Trail+ variant, which could limit app selection. Its 1280×800 pixel resolution is too low for the current market, and its 1GB RAM is actually lower than its 8-inch counterpart. It comes with 16GB internal storage and a 3MP camera along with a 6800mAh battery. It runs Android 4.2 as well and weighs 510g with a 7.95mm frame.
It appears that the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, at $299, is the best deal here by a long shot. The 10.1-inch version doesn’t know what it is, and aside from battery life (and size but not resolution) offers no substantive improvements over the less expensive 8-inch model. It does offer an IR blaster and companion Smart Remote app, along with TV Out capabilities, but that’s hardly enough to account for the price disparity.
We’ll be reviewing all of these models when they arrive next month, so stay tuned.
