Google has added the ability to scan and highlight scanned books, namely ones that are included in its under-appreciated archiving project. Many of these have been converted, using OCR technology, from static pages to fully-annotatable books, and users can now highlight memorable passages or leave notes to review later.

Users can also copy text as long as the content copyright isn’t too restrictive, and users can read and annotate rental books, if supported. Google recently began selling and renting textbooks in the US, and will soon roll out the capabilities to other countries.

These changes apply to both the Android and iOS versions of the app, and both have been given small design updates and performance improvements.
