Last May, Bell and RBC announced a partnership to launch a “secure mobile payments solution” by “the end of this year.” This would bring the ability for Bell and RBC customers to pay for small ticket items (debit or credit) from a compatible smartphone — which will be a number of BlackBerry smartphones (BlackBerry Z10, Q10, Bold 9900, Bold 9790, Curve 9360), “and a range of Android devices from manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG and more.”
The end of the year is near and it looks like the program might see the official rollout now happen in early 2014. Since the mobile payment space is heating up, specifically with Rogers announcing its suretap Wallet, we reached out to Bell and RBC for an update on when Canadians can expect this initiative to become reality.
Suzanne Willers, RBC Corporate Communications, stated in an email to us that “The RBC Secure Cloud Road Test is still currently underway, going well and slated to run to through December 2013. We have actively engaged participants including consumers and merchants with the goal of identifying the most popular features, desired applications, and usability feedback from the broad spectrum of mobile commerce possibilities. At this time, we are unable to offer much more but please stay tuned for our announcement.”
When Bell and RBC’s mobile payment solution launches it’ll be an addition to the current RBC Mobile banking app and will appear as another option on the apps menu.
