Toronto-based photography startup, 500px, has recently pushed past incumbent Flickr as the de facto professional photographer’s dream service, but are also courting the consumer market with their passive smartphone and tablet apps.
After launching on iPad in 2012, the company now has apps for iPhone, Android smartphones, Android tablets, Windows 8, Chrome and, with its latest release, Windows Phone 8.
The app is quite similar to its iOS and Android counterparts, though it adopts a Metro feels with big lettering and horizontal swiping. But what it does boast different from its peers is the ability to automatically change the lockscreen wallpaper, and offers double-wide Live Tile for frequent visits to amazing places.
While it’s not yet possible to upload your own photos — on this or any mobile version, natch — users have access to their Flow, Favourites, Popular and Editors’ Choice categories. Photos look fantastic on the Nokia Lumia 1020’s AMOLED display, and content loads quickly as well.
The company has also rolled out the first version of its Glassware app for Google Glass, showing off photos from users in your area. Every couple of hours, you’ll get updated on popular or choice photos based on the EXIF data, which can be shared to others from Glass itself. It’s a pretty neat way of combining 500px’s incredible database of content with elements of gamification.
