Google is constantly adding neat features to the beta channel of its Chrome for Android browser, and today’s update to version 34 has a doozy. For the growing number of Canadians in possession of a Chromecast dongle, the latest version includes the option to “cast” videos from YouTube and other HTML5-powered portals to a television.
The feature is not included right now out of the box: one must manually enable a flag through the address bar: chrome://flags/#enable-cast
Once that is complete, you’ll see an icon near the top of the video, identical to the one seen in apps like YouTube for Android and Google Play Movies. Google opened up Chromecast access to third-party developers recently, and streaming access has been added to a number of video and audio apps since on both iOS and Android.
Chrome Beta for Android 34 also improves battery performance and fixes a ton of bugs, so get downloading if you haven’t already.
