Google acquires maker of Word Lens, plans to integrate its technology into Google Translate

Quest Visual, makers of an app called Word Lens, has been acquired by Google. This is one of the coolest and most helpful apps within the respected app stores as it allows your phone’s camera to immediately translate any language in real time.

Quest stated on its site that “With Word Lens, we’ve seen the beginnings of what’s possible when we harness the power of mobile devices to “see the world in your language. By joining Google, we can incorporate Quest Visual’s technology into Google Translate’s broad language coverage and translation capabilities in the future. As a thank you to everybody who supported us on our journey, we’ve made both the app and the language packs free to download for a limited time while we transition to Google.”

There was no indication of the purchase price, but it seems that this is a good move as it’ll enable Google Translate to become a better tool. Even better, as it states above, the company is waiving the language packs for an unknown period of time, which normally costs $4.99.

Download the apps here from Google Play, App Store, or for Google Glass.
