The Podcasts app for iOS has received a significant update, adding support for two major Apple initiatives – Siri and CarPlay – while also improving the app’s previously poor navigation.
Siri support allows the launch of a podcast by simply saying “play podcasts” or specific podcasts and stations after requesting them by name (e.g. “play This American Life”). It’s not exactly a game changer for podcast fans, but it’s a required feature for CarPlay, which heavily relies upon Siri for hands-free navigation while driving.
The improved episode browsing will likely provide regular Podcasts users more day-to-day benefit. The update app now displays podcast episodes yet listened to in an Unplayed tab, with episodes available for download or streaming shown in the Feed tab. The new Podcasts app also allows for offline listening and automatic deletion of completed episodes.
