The next version of Google’s Android will be announced in a few short hours.
Google I/O, its annual developer conference kicks off tomorrow, and head of Android, Sundar Pichai, was interviewed by Bloomberg BusinessWeek, declaring, “I want the world to understand what we are doing sooner.” Google typically unveils a new OS in the fall, but Pichai is clearly taking the company in a new direction. Pichai also revealed that he’ll talk about Android Wear, which is Google’s OS for wearable devices, and TV is also on the agenda with “software called Android TV.”
There is no indication as to what the name of the new OS will be called. Previous versions of Android followed the alphabet and some tasty kind of food: Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean and the latest being KitKat. Perhaps Lollipops, Licorice, Lettuce or Lamb (?)
Update: The rumour swirling around the web this morning is that Google execs will unveil the next version of Android today at Google I/O and welcome “Android 5.0 Lollipop” to join the others.
