Pinterest has joined the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Instagram, and Path by launching a private messaging offering within its social platform. Pinterest states that they are now seeing over two million Pins per day and the messaging feature will expand its offering and also bring a deeper level of engagement to its users.
For those unfamiliar with Pinterest, a Pin is officially described as a “visual bookmarks that you collect on boards” — in other words a digital scrapbook on the web. The major difference between Pinterest’s offering and all the others, including BBM, iMessage, Google Hangouts, etc, is the user connection is solely based on a specific Pin, either individually or in a group message, and it seems to be focussed on collaborating rather than simply quick messaging.
A Pinterest spokesperson noted, “This is different from other messaging platforms because conversations are around a Pin, and are focused on planning something for the future.”
The feature is simple and compliments the design. Once you see a Pin that you want to share and message to another Pinterest user, simply long press the image, type your message and hit the send button. This messaging option is currently available on the web, as well as its iOS and Android apps.
Check it out on the video below — which also gives a shoutout to Toronto at the end.
