Samsung unveils curved Gear S smartwatch

Samsung’s latest smartwatch packs 3G connectivity.

The Tizen-powered Gear S is a dramatic shift away from the plethora of previous wearables from Samsung, sporting an elongated curved display that “fits comfortably on a user’s wrist.” The 2-inch Super AMOLED display has a resolution of 360 x 480 and performs common user functions such as reading messages, alerts and notifications. Samsung also included “customizable screen options” that give Gear S a sense of individuality.

Probably the biggest clincher for the Gear S is the inclusion of 3G connectivity that brings a data connection to one’s wrist, so no more pairing with your smartphone to make calls or surf the web (the Gear S also has Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity). Samsung states this “powerful wearable experience gives consumers the freedom to live their life on the go.”

Additional specs of the Gear S include a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, and a 300mAh battery. As for embedded sensors, the Gear S comes with a heart rate monitor, GPS, compass, and barometer. The device’s dimensions are 39.8 x 58.3 x 12.5mm, and it is IP67 certified dust and water resistant.

As for availability, the Gear S will be launch in “global markets” beginning this October. No indication of price points.
