Cyanogen Inc., makers of the CyanogenMod open source Android firmware and partners in the OnePlus One and Oppo N1, has requested private alpha testers on its Google Plus page for “something really cool” the company is working on with Nextbit.
Nextbit, if you weren’t aware, is a start-up comprised of ex-Google and Motorola execs, with a mandate to develop technologies allowing for deeper integration between cloud and mobile devices. The company raised $18 million in Series A funding from Accel Partners and Google Ventures earlier this year, and most recently added former HTC SVP Scott Croyle, who was responsible for the user experience and design of all HTC products, including the HTC One and HTC Sense.
With Nextbit’s hardware pedigree, and Cyanogen’s popular Android variant, the possibilities of a new device emerging from the partnership (hopefully with broader availability than the OnePlus One) are strong. It should be noted that Cyanogen has also recently staffed up its executive team, including an actual VP of Marketing, and a new Head of Ecosystems to increase the number of services that integrate with Cyanogen. All signs indicate that the company is prepping to take a much bigger swing at the mobile market.
