The success of any platform lies with those developing for that ecosystem. Microsoft is hoping to make things a little easier on Windows developers with the removal of the annual renewal fee for Windows Developer Centre accounts.
The change was made today and will mean Windows and Windows Phone developer accounts don’t expire. Previously, if you didn’t pony up the required $19 to renew your account every year, your apps would be removed from the Windows Store.
Microsoft has confirmed that developers need only pay a one time registration fee to gain access to the Windows Dev Centre. In addition to this change, the company also detailed its new Dev Centre Benefits program, which gives developers access to offers and tools. The program covers three tiers (Explorer, Expert, and Master) and devs climb the ladder as their app downloads and revenue climbs.
This time last year, Microsoft made the $19 renewal fee “permanent” having dropped the price down from $99 as part of a summer offer. For reference, iOS devs are still being charged $99 per year, while Android developers pay a one time fee of $25 when they register.
