Following its report on the “Best Canadian Brands of 2014,” consultant Interbrand has released its global brand rankings for 2014. While Telus, Rogers, and Bell were all on the Canadian report, they’re nowhere to be found on the global rankings – Thompson Reuters is the only Canadian brand to make the list.
The report is filled with mobile and consumer technology companies, however, with Apple and Google holding the #1 and #2 positions, respectively. Other notable companies include Microsoft at #5, Samsung at #7, Amazon at #15, and Sony at #52. Nokia, despite the impending deprecation of its brand, continues to hang on at #98.
In order to be eligible for Interbrand’s global rankings, companies must fit a set criteria:
- Have at least 30 percent of revenue must come from outside the brand’s home region.
- Have a significant presence in Asia, Europe, and North America, as well as broad geographic coverage in emerging markets.
- Provide sufficient, publicly available data on the brand’s financial performance.
- Economic profit must be expected to be positive over the longer term, delivering a return above the brand’s cost of capital.
- Have a public profile and awareness across the major economies of the world.
