Last month, Sony adjusted its annual earnings forecast to account for poor performance in the mobile space. Now, it looks like Sony could make further adjustments, this time to the number of units it expects to sell for the fiscal year ending March 2015.
The Wall Street Journal cites people familiar with the matter that say Sony is considering lowering its target for smartphone sales for the current fiscal year. Though these sources didn’t mention what the new target might be, Sony’s current sales target for smartphones is 43 million units, which was revised down from a previous forecast of 50 million units.
Speaking during September’s revision, Sony confirmed plans to revise its mobile communications strategy to “reduce risk and volatility” by shifting gears in certain geographical areas, concentrating on premium phones, and reducing the number of mid-range phones it produces.
Earlier this week, rumours emerged regarding the specs of the Xperia Z4. These reports also indicated that Sony planned to release just one flagship phone in 2015, the Z4, which seems to be in line with the company’s intention to streamline its focus on premium devices. The company has multiple iterations of the Z3, and the device itself is not all that different from last year’s version of the Xperia Z. If the rumours about the X4 are true, it will be a massive step up from the Z3 in terms of hardware.
