Android Wear now officially supports GPS tracking, Bluetooth headsets

Over the last few days, both LG and Motorola began rolling out an Android Wear update to G Watch and Moto 360 users respectively. This update added support for GPS tracking (for watches that have a GPS chip, obviously), as well as the ability to play music back from your watch without your phone (this feature is geared towards joggers that want to reduce the number of devices they bring with them).

Google has now made the update official, confirming through the Android blog that the update will be rolling out to the G Watch, Gear Live, and Moto 360 over the next few days. This update is the first of two updates that are expected before the end of the year. The second will bring long-awaited support for custom watch faces on Android Wear devices.

Right now, the only device that actually benefits from the GPS support is Sony’s upcoming SmartWatch 3. That device was announced at IFA in September and hit Google Play late last week priced at $279.99 CAD. The SmartWatch 3 is now available for pre-order in the United States, though the Canadian Play Store still has the SmartWatch 3 listed as ‘coming soon.’ We’ll keep you posted on the pre-order status for the SmartWatch 3.
