The Economist wants you to start your day with a jolt of current affairs. Announced this week, Economist Espresso is a daily brief that will be delivered for free via mobile to users that already subscribe to the Economist. Those that don’t already subscribe will get access to one article per day and will otherwise have to pay $4 for full access.
“Delivered to your smartphone or inbox before breakfast, it tells you what’s on the global agenda in the coming day, what to look out for in business, finance and politics and, most important, what to make of it,” the editors of the Economist said in a statement.
Espresso will be published in three separate editions, one each for the Americas, Europe, and Asia, five days a week and is produced by existing Economist staff members. Economist editor-in-chief John Micklethwait told the Guardian that the goal with Espresso is to give people a must-read that offers a breakdown of the pertinent news that can be consumed in five minutes.
Available for Android or iPad, non-subscribers can try Espresso for free for the first month. Existing subscribers will be able to opt-in to receive Espresso via email starting next week.
