Though its deployment still pales next to that of iOS 8, Lollipop is rolling out fairly quickly compared to previous releases. The update started rolling out to Shield Tablet users less than a month after the software was officially announced, and now owners of the GPe LG G Pad 8.3 are also getting access. Android Police reports that users are now seeing OTA updates pop up on their devices.
The Google Play Edition LG G Pad 8.3 hit the States in December 2013. Though it wasn’t ever released on the Canadian Google Play Store, Lollipop’s arrival on the G Pad 8.3 makes it the first Google Play edition device to receive the update. Because it’s a tablet, carrier certification is not a necessary part of the equation, which likely led it to its expedited release.
The first GPe device was the Samsung Galaxy S4, which is apparently also very close to receiving Lollipop. SamMobile has photos of a GPe S4 running a beta build of Android 5.0. HTC has also teased a Lollipop release for GPe versions of its One M8. No word from Motorola on the fate of the Moto G GPe, though Sony has said the Z Ultra equivalent will be the first of its devices to get Lollipop. The Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series will follow.
