Samsung is one of the only smartphone companies that can produce the internals powering its phones as well as the phones themselves. This means the company has a unique perspective on what’s coming down the line.
According to Samsung, that’s large-screen flagship devices with UHD displays. This will require faster DRAM, which Samsung says is now officially in production. The South Korean company this week announced that it had initiated production of the industry’s first 8 gigabit (Gb) low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM manufactured on the 20nm process.
Samsung says its new 20nm 8Gb LPDDR4 is faster and consumes less energy than the DRAM used in PCs and servers thanks to an I/O data rate of up to 3,200 megabits per second. It can also support UHD video recording and playback as well as continuous shooting of images over 20 megapixels. It doubles the performance and density offered by the 20nm 4Gb LPDDR3 and this new 8Gb chip will allow for the creation of a 4GB LPDDR4 package.
This is a pretty big development for mobile memory, enough to net Samsung an honorary CES Innovation Award ahead of the show next month. This is the third year running that Samsung’s mobile DRAM solutions have been honoured at the CES awards (its 2GB LPDDR3 and 3GB LPDDR3 solutions were honored in 2013 and 2014).
