Whirlscape, the company responsible for popular keyboard app Minuum, has been working to improve typing efficiency for more than a year. Now the company is going to cut down on the time we spend looking for emoji to complement our texts.
A post published over on the Minuum blog reveals that the company has been working on a sort of predictive text for emoji that suggests relevant emoticons based on the words you type. While some examples are obvious, like the phrase ‘junk food’ triggering burger, fries, and fried chicken emoji, others are actually not so obvious, but still pretty useful. For example, “We need to go camping again this summer!” brings up the tent and sun emoji, but also the row boat, bikini and tree emoji.
Whirlscape says this is possible thanks to “massive data processing of real emoji use” and its own “hyper-intelligent” algorithms, though it doesn’t elaborate on the process any further (Friday’s blog post does promise more information on that soon). It’s available now on Android and iOS in the next few weeks.
