LG announces four new mid-range phones ahead of MWC

LG’s G Flex 2 was one of the most interesting devices at CES 2015, and not just because there was a shortage of mobile devices at the show. The curved phone, based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810, a 5.5-inch display, and a 3000mAh battery, has a beautifully sleek, curved design that wouldn’t look out of place in a car magazine. It has flagship written all over it, and so we’re not expecting another big announcement from LG at MWC next week.

Perhaps that’s why the company has decided to let its relatively unexciting announcement go a bit early. The company today announced several new devices that will make their debut in Barcelona next week. These are mid-range phones that range from 4.5 to 5 inches in size. LG is focusing on the “exceptional” prices with this mid-range lineup, which contains the Magna, Spirit, Leon and Joy.

The Magna, with its 5-inch display, is the largest of all four, and packs a quad-core processor, an 8MP camera in the back, a 5MP sensor up front, and a 2,540mAh battery that is actually removable. Not something you see every day.

LG offered much less in the way of information about the Spirit, Leon, and Joy, though we know they feature 4.7-inch, 4.5-inch, and 4-inch displays respectively. The Spirit also has an 8MP camera and we know that all four devices will be available in 3G and 4G variations. To distinguish between the two, the 4G phones will have metallic backs while the 3G versions will have patterned plastic back covers. Other than that, this trio remains a relative mystery.

No doubt LG wants to save something for MWC, so we’ll hear all about these phones in about a week’s time. There’s also a chance some users will see them in the wild before then, as LG has said a global roll out will start in select markets this week, though there’s no word on pricing just yet.
