According to a new report from WinBeta, Microsoft will unveil a successor to its Surface 2 tablet in the coming weeks.
Some readers might recall the Surface 2 shipped in 2013 with Windows RT, a tablet-only version of Windows 8 built to work with ARM processors. Despite updating its Pro line with the Surface Pro 3 in 2014, Microsoft did few favours for RT-equipped devices. In fact, neither Microsoft, nor any of its hardware partners, manufacture any Windows RT-based PCs or tablets. The OS, for all intents and purposes, is dead.
The Surface brand, however, will continue in the form of a new tablet.
The new tablet is said to include one of Intel’s new Atom or Core M processors, the latter of which is an integral part of Apple’s slim new MacBook, and features a fanless design. Additionally, WinBeta says that the device will ship with a full version of Windows 8.1, which users will be to update to Windows 10 for free when the OS ships later this year.
According to the site, the device likely won’t be marketed as a Pro tablet; instead, Microsoft likely intends for this new tablet to challenge more affordable devices like Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S, marketing that it’s able to run full Windows apps.
The website says the new Surface will be unveiled at next month’s Microsoft Build conference and will likely ship a couple of weeks later.
