Last August, BlackBerry CEO John Chen proudly announced that a restructuring process that trimmed 7,000 employees from its balance sheet was finished.
At the time, an internal memo noted, “We have completed the restructuring notification process, and the workforce reduction that began three years ago is now behind us… More importantly, barring any unexpected downturns in the market, we will be adding headcount in certain areas such as product development, sales and customer service, beginning in modest numbers.”
Today, some unfortunate news has arrived for more BlackBerry employees, as the company has slashed an unknown number of jobs within its devices division in various offices around the world. BlackBerry confirmed the news in an email, stating it will be consolidating its device software, hardware and business applications business into one group.
“We know that our employees have worked hard on behalf of our company and we are grateful for their commitment and contributions,” the company said.
BlackBerry is still pressing forward with several new devices this, such as the recently-released Leap, and the upcoming slider flagship, but its main focus has been on the enterprise market with a laser focus on providing an enhanced level of security.
BlackBerry will report its fiscal Q1 2016 results on June 23rd.
