Asus has had internal conversations about acquiring follow Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC, according to a report from Reuters.
“Our chairman has chatted about the topic internally,” said David Chang, the company’s chief financial officer, in an interview with Reuters. “Still, the chances of an actual takeover are not big as Asustek is a company that has depended on organic growth.”
Asus later issued a follow-up to Chang’s comments, saying that, while it is open to all such opportunities, it is not currently in talks with HTC to purchase the company.
Speculation that HTC would be acquired by another company started last week when the company released its preliminary Q2 financial results. Following four straight quarters of profitability, HTC saw a steep decline in revenues. Poor sales of the One M9 are thought to the cause of the company’s newest financial woes.
