Consumer launch of HTC Vive delayed to the start of 2016

HTC Vive

HTC and Valve today announced that the consumer rollout of the Vive virtual reality headset has been pushed back to early 2016.

In the lead up to this weekend’s Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle, Washington, where participants will be able to demo the much-anticipated VR headset, co-developer Valve issued a press release that says that initial quantities of the Vive will be limited.

“Later this year, HTC will offer the first commercial Vive units via a limited quantity of community and developer systems, with larger quantities shipping in calendar Q1 2016,” says the statement that was sent out this morning.

This means that the Vive will launch within the same general time frame as Facebook’s Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus headset for the Playstation 4.

Valve has been sending out free Vive headsets to games developers, including ones that are based in Canada, since the start of June. In the same press release where it announced the delay, the company said that 10,000 developer kits have sent out thus far, and that 80 Vive-specific titles are currently in development.

Despite the delay, Canadian consumers will still have at least one chance to try out the Vive before it launches next year. In September, HTC is taking part in a Best Buy-led wearable exhibit that is taking place at Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square. The Taiwanese company will have several demo units on site, and the event is free to anyone that can make it out.
