Canadian carriers begin rolling out Android 5.1.1 update to Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge [Update: halted due to bugs]

Update, September 3rd, 5:27pm: Rogers has halted the rollout of Android 5.1.1 on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge after finding a bug that it is “currently working with Samsung” to fix.

It’s unclear whether the same bug affects the other carriers’ models, but we’ve reached out to them for comment.

Rogers also confirmed that the Android 5.1.1 update will bring Voice Over LTE support to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

We’ll update this post when the rollout resumes.

Canadian carriers have begun updating the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge to Android 5.1.1, two weeks after the Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ went on sale.

The update brings a number of new features, including more granular manual controls for the camera, enhanced security, and the vaguely-worded “New and / or enhanced features.” Thanks, Samsung.slack-imgs.com

If our experience with Android 5.1.1 on other devices is any indication, the update should fix many of the intermittent performance and stability issues on the Galaxy S6 and its edge counterpart. Specifically, memory management should be considerably better, improving battery life and multitasking reliability.

We’ve heard reports that Rogers has begun rolling out the update, but a trickle should become a stream anytime now, so let us know when your device receives the 475MB download.

Thanks Fahad for the initial tip!
