While most Canadians were asleep, LG announced its newest phone, the LG V10, in the company’s home country of South Korea.
The V10’s most notable feature is its “second screen” display. Measuring 2.1-inches wide and with the same 513 pixel per inch density as the V10’s main 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 display, the second screen functions differently depending on the state of the phone’s main display.
When the main display is turned off, the second screen will remain on, and will display information on the time, date, weather and the state of the battery. LG says this always on functionality does not adversely affect the phone’s battery life.
In contrast, when the main screen is active, the second screen turns into a dedicated app launcher. Moreover, if the user is watching a movie or playing a game and notification arrives, the V10 will push it to the second screen in way that is supposedly discrete and not distracting.
More compelling is the V10’s other notable feature. In addition to featuring a 16-megapixel, f/1.8 main shooter, the V10 also has a manual video mode. Anyone brave enough to fiddle with manual settings can adjust shutter speed, frame rate, ISO, white balance and focus while recording a video. In addition, videos can be shot at 720p, 1080p or 2160p, and at 16:9 or 21:9 aspect ratios.
The front-facing camera has also learned a new trick. It now features two separate lenses. The first lens has a 80 degree field of view, while the other is 120 degrees. There aren’t any 3D effects here, but LG uses both lenses to capture ultra-wide selfies. There’s also the option record with all three cameras at once, which is a strange feature, to say the least.
In terms of other specs, the V10 features a Snapdragon 808 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 3,000mAh replaceable battery and 64GB of internal storage. Additionally, a microSD allows one to expand the V10’s storage by an additional 2TB.
The phone also supports Category-6 LTE Advanced, so should the V10 ever come to Canada — more on that below — anyone that buys it on Bell, for instance, will be able to take advantage of exceptionally fast download speeds.
LG also touts the device’s hardy exterior, made from 216L stainless steel and a durable textured back cover that should withstand more serious drops than the average smartphone.
As of the writing of this article, LG has not announced any plans to bring the V10 to Canada. However, the press release LG sent us over notes that the company will announce additional launch markets over the next couple of weeks.
The company also noted this is the first of many V series phones to come, so even if the V10 does not make it to Canada, there’s still a chance other second screen equipped phones will come here.
