Back in late July, SaskTel announced it had purchased 20Mhz of AWS-1 spectrum from Wind Mobile, which acquired the airwaves through Rogers’s purchase of Mobilicity earlier this summer.
Though terms of the deal with Wind weren’t disclosed, SaskTel promised to deploy the AWS-1 spectrum as soon as possible, improving the reach of its LTE signal in many parts of Saskatchewan, while speeding up performance in major cities like Regina and Saskatoon to a theoretical speed of 150Mbps.
The new spectrum has been deployed in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Swift Current, North Battleford, Estevan and Weyburn, according to the company, and widens its LTE channel from 15Mhz to 20Mhz.
SaskTel’s CEO also hinted that it plans to deploy LTE to an increasing number of rurally-located customers in the coming months, likely with newly-purchased 2,500Mhz spectrum it obtained as part of Industry Canada’s latest auction.
