“No innovation, no future. It is not enough to have tradition,” said TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver this morning at the unveiling of the company’s new Connected Watch in New York.
“Today is the marriage of watch valley and silicon valley. The Swiss watch industry is connected to the future.”
TAG Heuer’s Connected Watch has the history of a Swiss watch, but runs Google’s Android Wear. On the outside, the Connected watch is made of titanium and sports a 1.5-inch round watch face with a 360×360 pixel display (240ppi).
TAG’s smartwatch measures in at 46.2mm, 12.8mm thick, weighs 52 grams, and is also scratch-resistant. The watch comes with a vulcanized black rubber strap with a matching titanium buckle. In addition, the smartwatch is available in various strap colour options: blue, red, green, orange, white and yellow.
Inside, the Connected watch features an Intel-powered 1.6GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of internal storage, Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi, and a number of sensors, such as fitness tracker and directional wind and weather monitoring. The Connected watch is also IP67 certified splash-proof water resistant. As for battery life, TAG states the 410mAh battery will give you a minimum 25 hours battery life.
The Connected watch works with Android smartphones running Android 4.3 and higher and also iPhones on iOS 8.2.
As for price, the Connected smartwatch will be available in limited supply at Raffi Jewellers in Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall for $1,650 CAD. It appears the availability is, at least for now, exclusive through the one Toronto-based merchant.
