Android Wear is a simple but powerful wearable platform that is constantly improving. The current generation of smartwatches has mostly been tied directly to a smartphone, requiring theĀ devices to be connected by either Bluetooth or WiFi to access all features.
Yesterday, Google announced that smartwatches running Android Wear will be taking another step towards independence, with support for cellular connectivity. While a smartphone with a cellular connection will still need to be paired with the Android smartwatch, the watch can have its own cellular connection, so you can keep up with messages, notifications, and calls without keeping your phone nearby.
At the moment, only one Android Wear device with cellularĀ support exists, and that’s the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE. For the time being, this watch will be US-only, available from AT&T and Verizon, but international customers will be able to take advantage of this new functionality in the coming months, likely on anĀ unannounced Android Wear device.
