Sony says it’s working on an official PS4 to PC and Mac in-home streaming solution

Earlier this week, a fan made application allowing users to stream PlayStation 4 games to the PC appeared online. While the app’s performance is far from perfect, it seems to have prompted Sony to reveal it’s working on an official solution for in-home streaming PlayStation 4 games to devices other than the PlayStation Vita and Xperia Z5.

Yesterday, Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios (and a prolific Twitter user), responded to a fan tweet, revealing his company plans to launch dedicated PC and Mac PS4 streaming apps at some point in the near future.

Unfortunately, if Sony’s Remote Play performance is any indication, we’re likely in for a disappointment when Sony launches Mac and PC streaming. While Remote Play works great sometimes, it doesn’t adapt as well to variable network conditions as was the Microsoft’s Xbox One streaming solution. This leads to a number of latency and image streaming related issues.

Bringing PC and Mac streaming to the PlayStation 4 also means games will be able to be played with the console’s native controller, the Dualshock 4. One of the most significant problems with in-home streaming the PlayStation 4 to the PS Vita is most games control schemes don’t transfer well to the handheld device.
