Google is hoping its new Unity Google Cast Remote Display plugin will encourage developers to design their games with Chromecast connectivity in mind.
According to a recent post on Google’s development blog, the plugin makes it easy for developer to stream Unity-based games to any device using Chromecast. Google says its new development API takes unique advantage of the GPU and CPU in Android and iOS mobile devices to render games directly on televisions. Unity is a popular cross-platform gameĀ development framework that aids in the design and creation of video games.
What’s interesting is developers with already released Unity games only need to import Google’s Remote Display technology into their titles to integrate casting into their game.
It’s unclear how many game creators will take advantage of this new ability, but it will likely be a welcome feature for many Chromecast owners, particularly those frustrated with the device’s lacklustre gaming offerings.
However, latency could easily play a role in making smartphone-to-Chromecast gaming unplayable. It’s still unclear if Google has found a way to circumvent this issue with its new Chromecast API.
Games that currently feature Google’s new Unity Chromecast support include Monopoly Here & Now and Risk. Popular mobile games likeĀ Monument ValleyĀ (which is still free right now on iOS), Crossy Road, I Am BreadĀ andĀ Hitman Sniper, were all created in Unity.
Google’s Unity remote display plugin launched yesterday and is available onĀ GitHub and Unity’s Asset Store.
