Along with the release of iOS 9.3 and watchOS 2.2 beta builds today, Apple has also pushed out the beta version of tvOS 9.2 to developers, adding a number of often-requested features to the company’s set-top box operating system.
The update comes just over a month after the release of tvOS 9.1 and is poised to be the first major update to tvOS since it launched back in October alongside the release of the 4th generation Apple TV.
tvOS 9.2 adds Bluetooth keyboard support to the Apple TV, a feature many complained was absent from the set-top box’s initial release. The beta OS also brings often-requested folder support to tvOS, allowing users to divide apps into different categories. Early impressions indicate that while folders are a welcome addition to tvOS, the feature is still somewhat glitchy, though, it’s important to keep in mind that the software is still in beta. Apple’s Podcast app is also set to make its way to tvOS with 9.2.
Other tvOS 9.2 additions include MapKit integration, a feature that allows developers to add maps to tvOS apps. A revamped app switcher user-interface has also launched, and Siri is also now compatible with French Canadian.
The process required to install tvOS beta software is more difficult than testing iOS or OS X developer builds. Installing the beta requires the Apple TV to connect to a computer via with a USB-C to USB-A cable, after the software is downloaded through iTunes.
tvOS 9.1 brought Siri Support to Apple Music, which allows Apple’s personal assistant to play content from Apple Music with simple verbal commands.
