My favourite kinds of apps are not necessarily the flash-in-the-pan, brand new apps that come and go, being talked about for 72 hours on Twitter. For an app to really do it for me, it needs to serve a specific purpose, and work exceptionally well.
In that vein, this week I’ll be talking about the Cineplex app. Right off the bat, it’s important to note that if you don’t like watching movies in a theatre, this app will be of no use to you. If your favourite theatre is a one-screen movie house, you won’t be able to buy tickets for it here. I enjoy watching movies in the theatre, and this app makes that whole proposition paperless and seamless.
First off, I love it when a mobile application really takes advantage of the specific tools a platform offers. Integration with Facebook means that I can log in to my Scene account without having to remember any passwords, and my Scene card is right there in the app, or in my Wallet on iOS.
The process of buying tickets in the app is very nice too, with all your options laid out nicely and sequentially, with the option to pick seats right there in the app for VIP showings, or special seating areas. Within a few minutes, on the way into the theatre, you can have tickets bought and ready to go.
Another really nice touch that Cineplex gets right is once you’ve got your tickets and you arrive at the theatre, there are multiple kiosks for ticket pickup, and scanning the barcode on your phone to print your tickets takes seconds.
In developing app stores, the goal for most developers is to have niche services that do one job, and do it really well. Cineplex epitomizes that idea, as its design is really simple and straightforward.
You can pick a movie, see showtimes for your favourite theatres, buy your tickets, scan and pick them up, and enjoy the show, and you barely have to raise a hand or bat an eye.
If you’re a frequent movie-goer, and you don’t use this app for Android or iOS, I strongly recommend you get it. On iOS, as of last year, you can even buy your tickets online from a desktop, and then open the ticket on your phone and add it to your Wallet app. It’s the little things like these that are so appreciated in a great app.
